To my dearest husband,

May the truth never leave your side, and the Lord never forsake you, but always keep you in His care.

Your Loving Wife,

Arlene

Tears welled up in Luke's eyes. He missed his parents more than he realized. He had taken them for granted for so long and now they were gone. He allowed them to die without telling them how much he loved them. He felt like his heart might break. Regret always seemed to blossom at the most inopportune times for Luke, often when he stopped to really consider the measure of his own life.

He was truly alone. His parents had been dead for several years. His sister had died nearly a decade before that in a tragic boating accident, and he hadn’t seen his brother in years. He had no other family and only a few acquaintances that barely noticed him. Why had he fought so hard to not believe in God? What would he now be left with because of his hardened heart?

Luke reflected on Mike’s story, his testimony. Were they really that different? Luke thought he never could have endured that kind of tragedy, but Mike had made it sound like a blessing when it was all over. Is that what life is like? He had heard somewhere before that God can turn rubble into a gleaming mansion. It might have been his mother. In any case, he got the point. God is bigger than all of our problems, fears, insecurities, and inadequacies. “God,” he whispered, “Help me to understand. Help me to see.”

The presence no longer stood watch, but jumped into action. Luke felt an invisible hand reach into his chest and grab hold of his heart. He gasped. It hurt, but not in a normal way. It was painful, but seemed somehow necessary. That fear startled him, but soon melted away. He began to feel warm, comforted. It washed over him in waves.

He clasped his hands together over the bible and prayed the same prayer Mike had recited himself so many years earlier. Another feeling rushed over Luke, and a dazzling vision of a great caring hand holding his heart revealed itself on the back of his eyelids. The heart itself looked gray, sickly. The hand gave it a soft squeeze and the outer shell of grey skin that surrounded it fell away, revealing a vibrant, healthy, and muscular beating heart.

A great weight of all the guilt and shame he had known disappeared in an instant. He opened his eyes and felt like it was the first time he had truly looked at anything. He had such clarity in that moment. All of the philosophical lies he had been told were stripped away. He now knew the truth – the only truth – and desired more than anything to never stray from it. He sobbed without control. It was not from sadness or happiness, but from thankfulness. He knew he was forgiven and had an opportunity to live again, to start fresh, to be reborn.
